NEARLY THREE HOURS later, exhausted and heartsore, Maeve rode beside Chuck in a shuttle he’d somehow conjured up. She’d unexpectedly served as the rallying point for her sons to forget their respective finishes and worries over how they’d do in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Instead, they were united in their disapproval of Chuck. Who is this guy? We know nothing about him. Don’t see him again until we check him out.

As if their roles were reversed and they were the parents and she the child. She’d barely dissuaded them from calling Penny and Sawyer on the spot, though she felt certain they were on the phone now.

She let her head roll back against the seat cushion and heaved a sigh.

“Did you eat?” Chuck asked.

She looked over at him. “I cooked enough for a small army. As long as I kept their mouths stuffed, they couldn’t harangue me.”

“About me?”

She nodded. “You’d think I was a teenager going out on her first date.” Abruptly she wished she hadn’t used that word.

“This wasn’t a date.” His eyes gleamed even in the darkness. “When we have a date, you’ll know it, Maeve.”

I didn’t make my fortune by being patient.” He bent his head to hers, and she forgot how to breathe. “But you’re worth waiting for.” He brushed his lips over hers.

“I—” All her thoughts scrambled. She could still recall the feeling of having him stand between her and trouble tonight, shielding her as he had at La Mireille. He was a strong, confident man, but he’d also shown gentleness. It would be easy, so very easy to lean toward him and…

She forced herself to sit up. Removed her hand from his. “I’m not ready,” she managed, but her voice was still hoarse. Breathy.

His grin was wry. “I’m all too aware of that.” He patted her hand once, then faced the front. “That’s where the patience comes in.”

“I might not ever be,” she confessed. “You shouldn’t wait for me.”

His gaze hardened. “What I choose to do with my time is my decision.” Then he looked ahead. “Here we are.”

Maeve grasped her purse and let the driver help her out, then he retrieved her suitcase. She followed Chuck to his plane, admiring the lines of it, understanding from her experience with other aircraft that his was topnotch. The interior was understated, no need for the extravagance that Hilton had chosen or the gleaming toys her sons had stocked theirs with.

This plane, like the man, was solid and strong and sure.

But she couldn’t afford to get involved with a man like that. She needed to be that way herself. She was through
